We Salute our Resident Veterans!

Hollywood Style Staging:
At 5 AM on the morning of November 11th a truce was signed in a railroad car parked in a French forest near the front lines. An agreement had been reached. The terms of the agreement called for the cessation of fighting along the entire Western Front to begin at precisely 11 AM that morning. After over four years of bloody conflict, the Great War was at an end. Thus the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month came to be known as Armistice Day and is remembered by many nations around the world to this day.

President Woodrow Wilson honored the first commemoration of Armistice Day with the following words: “To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…”

In 1954, Congress, at the urging of the veterans service organizations, struck out the word “Armistice” and inserted the word “Veterans.” With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, November 11th became a day to honor American veterans of all wars and became known as Veterans Day.

Now, the rest of the story (as Paul Harvey would say):
Gates Mills Club is honored to currently count 17 living veterans among our residents (ranging from 67 years to 104 years of age). We appreciate the sacrifices they and their families made to support and spread the ideals upon which our nation was founded. We are all proud of family members and friends who are currently serving or have served in recent service to continue that tradition. We at GMC have the privilege of giving back to our resident veterans in the way we serve their needs and in trying to assure a comfortable, contented lifestyle for them. We are fortunate they are amongst us. God Bless our Veterans and God Bless America!
